The Rotary Year for The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street began on 1st July 2017.

On Friday 31st June 2017 - we inducted our new Club President: Rotarian Kevin Jobson for the year 2017 - 2018.
President Kevin's chosen charity for the forthcoming Rotary year is:
  • SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Air Force Association) In recognition of their service to the Nation, SSAFA works to ensure that the needs of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families are met in an appropriate and timely way.  SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, exists to relieve need, suffering and distress amongst the Armed Forces, veterans and their families in order to support their independence and dignity.
Throughout the year The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street will be organising events to raise funds for the President's chosen charity, and other Rotary projects in support of our local, national and international communities.  We also promote & encourage good fellowship among our members, their families and friends throughout the Rotary year with ongoing charitable projects and social engagements, as follows:-

Rotarian David Hughes, of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, was awarded an MBE 'For Services To Charity' in Her Majesty The Queen's New Year's Honours List 2016.

Congratulations David on a well deserved honour!

  • Wednesday 25th January 2017 - Club Council Meeting at the President's house. All Club Council members are requested to attend.
  • Friday 27th January 2017 - Club Business Meeting.

  • Friday - 17th March 2017 - Club Council Meeting - will be held at 2.00 pm , immediately after the weekly Friday meeting ends. All Club Council members are requested to attend please.
  • Saturday 18th March 2017 - Rotary District 1030 - 'Young Musician Competition' commences at 2.00 pm at Duchess High School, Taylor Drive, Alnwick, Northumberland. A young pianist, Bolin Dai, aged 16 years, is competing sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.  In fact Bolin Dia won the District competition and goes on to the Regional competition in Edinburgh on Saturday 1st April 2017.  It will be a fun & fellowship day and members, family & friends are cordially invited to attend in support.  Please contact Past-President Bill Holden PHF, email: or telephone: 01388 527 818, if you have any queries.
  • Monday 20th March 2017 - 'The Lucky Durhams' - is a play being presented by The Youth Connection Theatre Company, directed by Past-President Linda Watson PHF, on Monday, 20th March 2017, at 7.00 pm, in Cornerstones Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street.  Tickets cost £5 (including refreshments) and can be obtained from Cornerstones Office or telephoning (0191) 388 2826.   • Friday 24th March 2017 - a brief Business Meeting followed by the award of The Rose Trophy, by President Brian Straughan, to local Student, Luke Williams, for earning the highest academic achievement among Chester-le-Street Students. In addition to The Rose Trophy, which he can hold for a year, Luke also received a framed certificate and a cheque for £50. (Click here: to see photographs).
    Friday 24th March 2017 - a brief Business Meeting & Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) at which Past-President Bill Holden introduces Tom Ludlow, who will represent the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, as this year's RYLA Candidate. (See photograph right courtesy of Rotarian Brian Corker).
  • Friday 7th April 2017 - Guest Speaker: Mr Eric Bulmer,  Mr Bulmer is Chairman of Wardens, Warden of the Plumbers' Company, Durham City Freemen (Go to the 'Links' page to visit their website).
  • Friday 14th April 2017 - Good Friday (Easter) - no meeting.
  • Friday 21st April 2017 - Special General Meeting.
  • Saturday 29th April 2017 - 'James Etherington Musical Award' - promising young Musicians who are resident or attend an educational establishment within an area covered by the DH (Durham County) post codes, and who wish to further their training in singing or the playing of musical instruments, are invited to apply to take part in the 'James Etheringtom Musical Award'.  The competition is being held, commencing at 7.00 pm, in the Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.   • Wednesday 3rd May 2017 - St Thomas's Church, Stanhope, Co Durham, was visited for a tour of the Church, followed by 'Afternoon Tea', by Chester-le-Street Rotarians, their wives & friends at the kind invitation of Past-President Bill Holden PHF and his wife Nancy.  To see the photographs: Click on the 'Photographic Gallery' link above.
  • Wednesday 7th June 2017 - there is an Official Visit to the Rotary Club of Birtley at 6.30 pm at The Ravensworth Arms Hotel, Lamesley, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, NE11 0ER, by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.  All Chester-le-street Rotary Club's members are requested to attend in support of President Brian Straughan.
  • Saturday 17th June 2017 - 'President's Night' was held.  Congratulations to Club President Brian Straughan.  An excellent evening  with Club members, family & friends attending the celebrtatory evening which was full of of fun & fellowship, good entertainment, a mega raffle & a Paul Harris Felowship (PHF) award.  Click here: to view the photographs.
  • Friday 30th June 2017 - Hand-over Day - Rotarian Kevin Jobson takes over as President of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, from President Brian Straughan, for the ensuing year 2017 - 2018.
  • Sunday 9th July 2017, the Rotary Club of Birtley are holding a Fundraising Garden Party at the home of Margaret Smith, President of the Rotary Club of Birtley. She extends an invitation to any members of Chester-le-Street Rotary Club who would like to attend.  Further details from Birtley RC President, Margaret Smith, email:
  • Monday 7th - Friday 11th August 2017 - the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) - will be held at the Kingsway Outdoor Education Centre, Middleton-in-Teesdale. Tom Ludlow, a former winner of the Rotary Club's'Frank Baddilley Award' is taking part representing himself and the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.
  • Saturday 18th November 2017 - ABF the Soldiers’ Charity (North East) and SSAFA Tyne and Wear Branch will be holding an‘Arras Dinner 2017', from 7.00 pm until 11.30 pm, at Northumbrian Universities Officers’ Training Corps, St Cuthbert’s Keep, Holland Drive, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 4LD. In aid of the two charities the tickets are priced at £27.50 per person, inclusive of champagne reception, wine and entertainment. Dress code: Black tie/Mess Kit with Miniatures or Lounge suit. Closing date is Tuesday 14 November 2017.
