EVENTS 2009 - 2010

The Rotary year for The Rotary Club of Chester-Le-Street began on 1st July 2009.

On Friday 4th July 2009 we inducted our new Club President: Rotarian Jim Lawrence.
 
President Jim Lawrence's chosen charity for the forthcoming Rotary year is:

1.  The Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Throughout the year we are organising events to raise funds for the President's chosen charity, and other Rotary projects in support of our local and international communities, also to promote good fellowship among our members and their families and friends:-

    The members of the Club extend their grateful thanks to Bill Holden for his efforts during the rotary year 2008-2009 and congratulate President Jim Lawrence on being elected Club President and wish him well for the forthcoming year.

  • Tuesday 7th July 2009 - Club Council Meeting at 6.30 pm.
  • Friday 10th July 2009 - Race Night at the Cricket Club, Chester-le-Street.
  • Wednesday - Friday 15th - 18th July 2009 - 'Fame The Musical' was performed by Rotarian Linda Watson's drama & theatre group 'Youth Connections' at Roseberry Sports & Community College, Newfield, Co Durham.
  • Friday 24th July 2009 - new member, Mr Bob Nicholson, was inducted into The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.

  • Tuesday 1st September 2009 - Club Council Meeting at 6.30 pm.
  • Saturday 5th September 2009 - A Musical Evening with 'Agape' is being held in the Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street, commencing at 7.00 pm. 'Agape' was formed in 1988 by a group of young people who enjoy singing a wide variety of religious and secular choral music. So why not come along and enjoy an evening listening to them.   • Tuesday - Friday 22nd September - Sat 17th October 2009 - visit by the Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team from New York State, USA, to District 1030. Some hosting is required.
  • Friday 25th September 2009 - the Club's annual 'Last Rose of Summer' competition was won, again, by Rotarian Bill Holden.
  • Friday 25th September 2009 - Rotary GSE Team from Rotary District 7170 USA attend The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street for a cultural visit, followed by a Presentation at our luncheon meeting.

  • Friday 16th October 2009 - Read the book "The Impossible Dream..... Come True":-
    "THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM ...... COME TRUE"
    by Rotarian Tom Moffat MBE
    This is a book written by Rotarian Tom Moffat MBE recounting the story of how Durham County Cricket Club attained first class status in 1992.
    A Must Read Book!
  • Friday 30th October 2009 - Evening Meeting at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm at our usual venue. The Guest Speaker is Phil Nixon speaking on "The Border Reivers". This meeting is in support of Rotary World Community Services.
  • Friday 6th November 2009 - a visit by an Ambassordorial Scholar.
  • Thursday 12th November 2009 - Visit to Durham Rotary Club.
  • Friday 13th November 2009 - Race Night at Chester-le-Street Cricket Club.
  • Saturday 21st November 2009 - Visit to Pelaw Grange Greyhound Stadium.
  • Friday 4th December - a visit by Pupils From Hermitage School.
  • Friday 18th December 2009 - Christmas Message meeting:

  • Tuesday - Thursday 12th - 14th January 2010 - Christmas Tree Recycling Project.
  • Friday 8th January 2010 - The Rose Bowl Trophy - an annual award made to the local Student with the highest academic achievement of the year among Chester-le-Street schools. Also a cheque presentation in aid of the North East Kidney Research Fund:-
    ROSE BOWL TROPHY
    The Rose Bowl is awarded annually to the Student in the Chester-le-Street area who gains the highest academic achievements of the year.

    CHEQUE PRESENTATION TO THE NORTH EAST KIDNEY ASSOCIATION
    Past-President Bill Holden (left) presents a cheque donation of £1500 to Dr Mike Ward, of the North East Kidney Research Association. Dr Ward, now retired, is a former Surgeon at the Transplant Unit, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne.
  • Friday 15th January 2010 - Business Meeting - to plan Book Launch 'Extravaganza'.
  • Friday 22nd January 2010 - Business Meeting - to plan Book Launch 'Extravaganza'.
  • Saturday 23rd January 2010 - a Concert to 'Salute Our Heroes' was held by The Army Benevolent Fund - 'The Soldiers' Charity', at the Gala Theatre, Durham.
    BOOK LAUNCH 'EXTRAVAGANZA' - DINNER & ENTERTAINMENT
    Saturday 27th March 2010 - Rotarian David Hughes' Book Launch 'Extravaganza', of his 7th book entitled 'My Son The Enemy', promoted by The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, is being held at Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring. All profit from the event and subsequent book sales will be donated jointly in aid of 'Help for Heroes' and the 'Army Benevolent Fund'.
    A 'must go to' evening out - dinner and entertainment - not to be missed.

  • Thursday 4th March 2010 - Christmas Tree Recycling Project Outcome:- See photograph below courtesy of Rotarian David Gregg:
    Christmas Season 2009 came to an end for the Club when Rotarians Ian Wilson (right), Derek Vince (left) and David Gregg handed the proceeds of the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Project, a cheque for £465, to Lynne Simmons of HQ Staff of the Great North Air Ambulance in Darlington. Having missed the opportunity to be photographed at Durham Tees Valley airport with the helicopter in January (it was fog-bound in Penrith!), it was also missing from the centre of Darlington!
  • Monday 29th March 2010 - Ladies. Our Daughter Club, The Rotary Club of Birtley, is holding a Fashion Show on Monday, 29th March 2010, at the Parish Centre, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham. The proceeds will go in aid of 'Help for Heroes'. For details click here: Fashion Show (.PDF).
  • Saturday 10th April 2010 - The James Etherington Music Awards, will be held in the evening in the Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street , by The James Etherington Music Trust, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street. The event is an annual competition for promising young Musicians and Singers in the DH (County Durham) postal district to help further their musical careers.
